Trains from the North: Trains leave from Glasgow, Central station to Dumfries directly.
You do not need to travel via Carlisle.
Trains from the South: Take the West coast line to Carlisle and change for connection to Dumfries. Tickets can be cheaper if you buy a ticket to Carlisle then purchase a separate ticket from Carlisle to Dumfries. If leaving from London, trains leave from Euston station.
